Spotlight Player of The Week: Brett Halbe

South Alabama scrum half, Brett Halbe, heads into his senior season with high expectations for South Alabama University rugby. “ I can’t wait for this season because we have a bunch of good guys this year and we have a ton of potential,” said Halbe. Halbe is currently the captain of the team and has played with the Deep South Conference All Star team.

Halbe, who is extremely competitive, can’t get enough of playing rugby and loves to get himself inside the try zone. He stated, “My favorite part about rugby is probably the competitiveness between the teams and the teamwork needed to be successful. I also love scoring but who doesn’t?”

Halbe has loved every moment playing rugby for South Alabama. “My experiences with South have been amazing even though we haven’t been too strong of a team these past few years,” said Halbe. He continued saying, “Being the captain for south is a great honor as well I like being able to lead my whole team to victory and have them follow by my side.”

Halbe has found memories of playing for South and says his favorite game is the against Spring Hill, the Old Shell Road rivalry. Halbe said “ I think my favorite memory playing with south had to be 2 years ago when we went up to Troy to face the Trojans on their home pitch. It was raining like crazy and muddy everywhere and they were projected to whoop our a** but with hard work and determination we fought through that 80 min muddy battle and came out on top for us to go 4-0 on the season. He continued, “I absolutely love playing Spring Hill as well due to the rivalry of Old Shell”

Halbe looks to end his playing career at South on a high note. With their current team and the coaching of Wes Darwin, the season looks bright for Halbe and the Jaguars.
