Baton Rouge, LA – February 14, 2018 – GiftTime Productions, LLC will be organizing the inaugural HBCU Rugby Classic, taking place on May 5, 2018 in Baton Rouge, LA. The HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) Rugby Classic is an invitational rugby tournament that will feature men’s rugby teams from Prairie View A&M, Morehouse College, and Florida A&M.
“This event will accomplish two major goals. The first goal is to increase exposure of rugby in the United States, and to the HBCU community particularly. The rugby community is known to be one of the most inclusive in sports. The participation that is had, on and off the field, is a unique experience. The second goal is to open a new cultural community to the sport. Not just as participants on the field, but in global opportunities off the field. Rugby is a sport that is prime for new ideas and plenty of roles to fill by men and women in communities with African-American and other people of color. An event like this allows us to emphasize the American cultural identity with rugby in the USA,” said CEO of GiftTime Productions, Gift Egbelu.
The HBCU Rugby Classic looks to provide an experience that intertwines rugby tradition with HBCU culture that will welcome and excite all spectators, new and old. Rugby is one of the largest team sports, and second most popular team contact sport in the world. Played by both men and women of all ages, rugby has been developing a larger profile with communities over the last couple of decades.
