Red River Collegiate Championship Preview: UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON

The D1A Red River Collegiate Rugby Conference will be held on April 1st.  The inaugural Canterbury North America Red River Collegiate Rugby Championships will be played at the Huns Field in Austin, TX.  Gift-Time Rugby Network will be broadcasting the championship live.

In the 7th place match stands University of Houston and Texas Tech.  Both of these #4 seeded teams have faced off before but Houston is eager for another shot and opportunity to play.  Cole Zander, a flanker and newly positioned hooker, said the Cougars first season in the D1A Conference has exposed them to better competition than they’ve previously had.

Earlier this year they earned their first win over University of Texas in a gripping match that concluded 10-8.  Down by 8 points after the first half Houston rallied their defense, hammered in a converted try, and won by a penalty kick with seconds left till full-time.  Zander commented the squad has been working hard to keep up and play against other long-standing programs in the Red River Conference.  “When we’re focused and communicating as a team we’re hard to break down.”

Looking forward to their next match, he explained the team has “always had the physicality but have recently improved our organization on defense.”  In addition to improving their set pieces and phase play Houston aims to be just as prepared as Texas Tech for April 1st.
