Rugby Recap: March 10th-12th

As Spring Break kicks off for many across the United States, many ruggers chose to head into the break with a bang this past weekend. In Men’s Collegiate play, Utah defeated Utah Valley 36-13, while their counterparts in Utah Valley University defeated BYU’s second squad 43-28. In California Conference action, Cal Poly defeated UC Santa Barbara 27-22, and San Diego State topped Santa Clara 92-28. Arizona beat the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame 62-12, and BYU pulled off an upset versus St. Mary’s with a 35-26 victory. Grand Canyon defeated Cal State Fullerton 59-10 in conference play as Clemson and Arkansas’s clash was canceled due to extenuating circumstances. In a match up of ranked squads, Lindenwood took on Davenport in Savannah Georgia as a part of the St. Patricks day tournament. After 80minutes of class rugby, Lindenwood took the victory 32-10.

In the NCRC group, Boise State defeated Oregon State 60-11, while their neighbors at Oregon secured a victory over Eastern Washington 60-17. In a battle of the Wests, Western Washington blew out Western Oregon 73-0. Down South, California faced a double header versus UCLA and USC. Versus UCLA, California held their own at an 88-7 victory. Against USC, California buried the visiting side 91-7. Missouri topped Truman State 76-0, while Penn State defeated St. Andrews from Scotland 46-31. In Texas, the UTEP Miners took on their rivals the UNM Lobos for Rio Grande Conference standing. After a rough 80 minutes, the Lobos beat the Miners 85-5.

In Senior Men’s Divisional matches, the El Paso Scorpions took on their I-10 counterparts the Las Cruces Horny Toads. After securing an early lead, the Scorpions finished off the Toads 38-12 to lead the Rio Grande Rugby Conference. Elsewhere in Texas, the Austin Blacks D1 and D2 clashed with their counterparts in the HARC. In D1 play, the Blacks topped the HARC 27-7, while D2 action saw the HARC fall to the Blacks 41-14. The Austin Huns beat NOLA 91-8 in regulation as HURT defeated Katy 33-7. San Antonio defeated the Woodlands 29-5, and DARC fell to Tulsa 17-10. Beyond the Lonestar State, Naples defeated Okapi 50-10, as Little Rock topped Oklahoma 40-10. The Memphis blues topped Baton Rogue in conference play, and Nashville beat Hopkins 41-7. Last but not least, the Birmingham Vulcans defeated Jackson 41-7.

In Senior Women’s Play, HARC defeated Little Rock in a rainy competition 38-10. San Antonio beat San Marcos 29-10, and the Austin Griffins defeated the DARC 39-10. Tulsa defeated OU in a crossover match 76-7, and UC Davis beat Stanford 50-0.

Last but not least, in this weekend’s high school matches Elsie Allen defeatedBerkeley 22-0, while Rosa beat Piedmont 25-5.
