In a press release today the Austin Huns RFC announced their intent to create a for profit rugby club. As the sport of rugby continues to advance in the USA, the efforts to legitimize the sport have increased. In the state of Texas rugby has been a steadily increasing endeavor. The building of the youth rugby team, to establishing elite level collegiate rugby in the state, now making pushes to make revenue generating rugby clubs.
The Huns may be the most recent team in Texas to have done it, but they aren’t the first. The Griffins Rugby Club have been established as a professional rugby side for the last two years, including the development of a brand new rugby facility. That doesn’t take away from the considerable leap that it takes to truly professionalize the sport.
With time people should expect to see more and more teams adjust over to a revenue generating sport. The continuing growth of the sport will see more teams converting to a revenue generating model and allowing more serious rugby to be played at the senior level of rugby. Congratulations to the Huns for their efforts
