In 2009, Clint Eastwood directed the movie “Invictus” which follows the story of Francois Pienaar (played by Matt Damon) and Nelson Mandela (played by Morgan Freeman) in post-apartheid South Africa leading up to the 1995 Rugby World Cup.
The Springboks were not expected to win, but with the political and racial tensions in the country, a victory would be a much-needed unifying event.
The movie highlights the relationship between Pienaar and Mandela, as well as the challenges and triumphs leading up to the big game. Despite its historical setting, the themes of unity and perseverance in “Invictus” are still relevant today.
You can find Invictus on HBO Max and Amazon Prime
