Rugby Recap: September 15th-17th

It was a weekend full of smash and grab Rugby as initial Conference play kicked off for most of the country. That being the case, here are your scores from across the various Divisions and Conferences.

Men’s D1A

In the Big 10 Conference, Indiana handled Purdue 82-20 while Illinois took down Iowa 37-15. In mixed pre-season games, Davenport defeated Buffalo 44-22 and the College All-Americans fell to the United Kingdom’s own Oxford University 20-18 after full time.

Amongst the Liberty Conference, UConn defeated Tufts 48-26. Elsewhere Binghamton topped Colgate 66-14, and Syracuse pulled a win over Brockport 38-15. Cortland was victorious in their clash versus Albany, scoring 44 points against Albany’s 11. Fordham stood tall after defeating Delaware 37-24, while Iona beat Rutgers 62-17.

In the Rugby East Kutztown went to town on St. Bonaventure, ultimately winning the fixture 69-17. Notre Dame fell to Penn State 43-17, while Army defeated Wheeling Jesuit 57-20.

Men’s D1AA

In the Chesapeake Conference, Mary Washington won their match versus Georgetown 69-12. Towson topped Virginia 37-31, while Virginia Tech held on for the nail biter victory against James Madison 19-18. Western Michigan saw a win against Michigan State, with the score reading 26-7 after eighty minutes.

Itching for the Ivy League action, Dartmouth brought the pain to Cornell for a win, final score 81-15. Harvard prevailed over opponent Brown 53-15, and Yale wrecked Penn 22-7.

Down South in the SRC, Alabama struck with fury against Florida in a 39-17 victory. Kentucky saw a win against Tennessee 44-24 after eighty minutes.

Men’s D1 Mixed

In a series of pre-season Non-Conference match ups, AIC beat NEC 51-17. Ohio State topped University of Notre Dame 19-18, and Lindenwood-Belleville handled Wisconsin 38-14. Bowling Green had a victory over Louisville 41-26, and North Eastern beat Rhode Island 41-16.

D2

In the Lone Star Conference, Abilene Christian defeated Trinity 12-5 in their season debut. Across the way, University of Dallas fell to Dallas Athletic Rugby Club 48-33, and Sam Houston State upset Texas A&M 41-14. Angelo State saw a dual set of wins, defeating UT Dallas 72-0 and Texas State 87-0.

In WIIL action, Illinois State stood tall over Loyola 68-17. UW Milwaukee beat down UW Lacrosse 71-0, while UW Whitewater defeated UW Stout 89-5.

The Southern Conference saw its fair share of matches, starting with App State wrangling Wake Forest 57-7. Fuman won versus UNCG 50-0, meanwhile ECU defeated UNCW 22-3. Coastal Carolina blew out UNC 38-0, while Citadel handled College of Charleston 53-10.

In the Deep South Rugby Conference, LSU-Alexandria had a huge win over UL-Lafayette, 92-0. University of South Alabama forfeited their match against Spring Hill College.

In the Cardinals Conference, The North Virginia Griffins emerged victorious versus UMBC 57-14. Madison Developmental saw a big win against George Mason 60-0, and Christendom tied Virginia Commonwealth 35-35. Old Dominion rocked Christopher Newport 40-19, and North Carolina State held on for the win against the Virginia Military Institute 34-29. William and Mary defeated Hampden-Sydney College 38-29, Roanoke took down Radford 43-20, and Duke fell to Washington and Lee 33-14.

D1 Women’s

In the Big 10 Conference, Notre Dame defeated Michigan State 59-0.

Dartmouth defeated Quinnipiac 22-17, and Harvard tied Army 33 all.

Sacred Heart saw their match postponed due to extenuating circumstances. UConn saw two big matches over the weekend, their opponents featuring cross-conference opponents St. Michaels. UConn’s A-side defeated St. Michaels 75-0, while the B-side found a victory as well 22-10.

D2 Women’s

In the Lone Star Conference, Abilene Christian University saw big wins versus LeTourneau University. ACU’s A-side defeated LTU 24-7, while the B-side saw a win too 19-17.
