Rugby Recap Women’s: September 1st – 3rd

This past weekend was filled with teams hosting season opener matches and scrimmages along with the start of some great league play. A mix of non-conference and NIRA collegiate matches this weekend had some great results.

National Champion Quinnipiac defeated Army 44-22. Sacred Heart came to play beating Castleton 84 to 10. Norwich also put up some numbers against University of New England 54 to 5. Notre Dame College racked up 60 points to Mount St. Mary’s 5. Penn State lost to Dartmouth 17-46. The United States Coast Guard Academy had a scrimmage with class clubs Bryant and Brown. A high scoring opening weekend for collegiate women’s rugby!

The Women’s Premier League also kicked off this weekend. The new Glendale Merlins travelled to pull off a nail-biter in San Jose, CA against the Berkeley All Blues 27-26. The Merlins held off a strong 2nd half attack by the All Blues securing their win. Beantown took on the Atlanta Harlequins in Lynn, MA showing their stuff winning 39-22. The Twin Cities Amazons beat the D. C. Furies by a large 48-19. The Amazons D2 side also had a victory over the Will County Morrigans. Chicago North Shore had a bye week but held a scrimmage against Chicago Women’s Rugby winning 85-0. The San Diego Surfers and ORSU also had bye weeks.
