Spotlight Player of The Week – Brittany Vegso

Brittany Vegso was only supposed to be in New Orleans for a six month period but after playing with the New Orleans women’s rugby program, she decided to stick around and see what the Big Easy had to offer.

Hailing from Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, Vegso got her start in rugby while attending Penn State University. ”  I was out to eat and saw 3 girls with “Penn State Rugby” jackets on and thought “I don’t really know what rugby is, but I think it is a fun thing, maybe I’ll give it a try.”  I showed up for my first practice and have been hooked ever since,” explained the scrumhalf. She went on to win a national championship with the squad in 2009 as well.

Playing for NOLA has proved to be a rewarding yet challenging one at times for Vegso. Recently, New Orleans and Baton Rouge combined to form Lagniappe and this has brought challenges to the team. Vegso still believes staying in New Orleans and playing is the best decision she could of made.

“It has been an honor to captain these women and I have learned so much about myself, both as a person and as a player, from my teammates.  Combining NOLA & BR to form Lagniappe has been a great challenge and experience, really making me examine what it takes to have a successful team on and off the field.  Like we say, “we aren’t something; we’re something else,” continued Vegso.
