This is a wild weekend of Rugby in the States. Plenty to look forward to. Check out what’s going on this week for the Eagles.
Sydney 7s
The USA will be entering into this match reeling from an underwhelming performance last week in the Wellington 7s. The USA finished the tournament in 6th place with back to back losses against Fiji and Australia. There were moments of greatness in the USA Squad, as they played well against France and Samoa in Pool play. On the flip side, the USA looked sluggish against England and Australia, while looking overwhelmed by Fiji.
For Sydney Sevens, the USA Eagles will have to look to open their offense a little more and distribute just a little more. speedsters, Perry Baker and Carlin Isles, accounted for half of the Eagles scores. The Eagles will have to also find away to sure up their defense. The Eagles allowed too many breakaways to happen. It almost cost them the pool match against Samoa, and was their undoing against England and Australia. USA should be able to come out of this match going into the cup quarterfinals. Wales and Japan, while having tenacious teams, aren’t nearly as talented and skilled as this US team. England will be the Eagles biggest obstacle, and if they play their opponent at the level they play other teams, they should come out over England.
USA Rugby Eagles 7s Schedule:
USA vs Wales at 7:50 p.m. CST on Friday
USA vs Japan at 11:48 p.m. CST on Friday
USA vs England at 3:20 a.m. CST on Saturday
American Rugby Championships
The USA Eagles are starting the first leg of the newly formed 6 Nations of the Americas, aka The American Rugby Championships. They will be taking on the Argentina. The Eagles come into this game with 11 new age rate players in the players pool. They will have a brand new head coach in John Mitchell. This will be the first step of a plausible 3 years process of establishing a consistent culture for this young Eagles squad. The Eagles will have the pleasure of former Eagles captain, Todd Clever, coming back and leading this squad. The experience should help keep together this Eagles team, which will most likely be overwhelmed by a very experienced Argentina team. Argentina will be coming in as the favorites. This Argentina team is chalked full of Rugby World Cup players and Super Rugby athletes. This team is fast, strong, and finished 4th in the world. This will be a great test to figure out where the Eagles can start from.
The matches can be watched on ESPN 3 at 7:00 pm CST.
Lindenwood vs. Arizona
This will probably be one of the biggest D1A matchups taking place this weekend. Lindenwood, the #3rd ranked powerhouse team out of St. Charles, Missouri, will take on University of Arizona, the #11 ranked team coming out of the PAC-12. This match is taking place in Dallas, TX at Texas Christian University and will be very interesting to watch. Both teams are coming off losses against higher ranked teams in St. Mary’s and University of Utah, respectively. This will be a rectification match for both teams.
